The Value of Purposeful (or Deliberate) Practice

Once again, the guys at Freakonomics have provided some serious food for thought. This recent podcast about how to become great at anything supports the notion that practice without purpose is wasted energy. While groups like Toastmasters offer a valuable forum to practice speaking skills, if that practice isn’t targeted and purposeful, it’s merely a chance to do something poorly over and over again.

Simply counting how many times a person says, “um,” is little use to someone trying to increase value in speaking. It’s necessary to get specific, expert feedback on on focus areas and strategies to apply to them so that each opportunity to practice yields maximum results and we can get great!
